Help Us Save the Orphanage
and Church in Haiti!

To Our Faithful Partners in Haiti Ministry,

Those of you who have partnered with us for a long time know that ministry in Haiti often comes with perils — sometimes with a heavy price. This week we find ourselves faced with the greatest threat to our base of mission operations since the earthquake in January of 2010. It is such a severe crisis that we are crying out to the Lord and we are calling upon each and every one of you to help us save our orphanage and our church.

Just a few short days ago, our main compound in LaPlaine was invaded by a small, heavily armed group of men from the Haitian National Police. They swarmed our compound and were confronted by Pastor Paul. It turns out the police were there to accompany a magistrate and this judge had issued a ruling that Souls Winning Ministries was not the rightful owner of the property where our compound has been built. Therefore, the judge ordered that Jean Paul, his staff, the children, and the church members must vacate the property.

How could this be? We have been operating on this land and also building structures upon it since Mr. Osias donated the land and sold us the orphanage house back in 2007. It turns out that Mr. Osias seized the land (as well as other plots nearby) illegally from the rightful owners — owners who had fled to France when Baby Doc went into exile. Mr. Osias held the land for some 20 years before he arranged for Souls Winning Ministries to acquire it. Now the legally entitled owners have returned to Haiti and have been successful in proving their title to the land. The magistrate ruled that in order to remain on the compound, we must become the true and rightful owners through buying the land from the legal owners. The price was set at $250,000. If Souls Winning cannot raise the purchase price, then the rightful owners can remove us from the land and are obligated to pay $100,000 to Souls Winning as partial compensation for the building improvements.

Pastor Paul's attorney immediately began negotiations with the owners of record to see if some arrangement could be made to prevent us from having to abandon the orphanage, school, and church which God had so graciously provided and which has been serving the community for some seven years. The legal owners are unwilling to lower the purchase price. However, they have granted Souls Winning 90 days in which to raise the funds before we will be required to vacate the property.

We are therefore asking for your help. We need your financial commitment, your prayers, and your help spreading the word about this need in raising $275,000 ($250,000 for the purchase of the compound and $25,000 to continue operations on the compound during this time) by the agreed-upon deadline of February 1, 2014. We have a little less than 90 days to achieve this goal. We ask that during this season of thanksgiving and of giving to others that you prayerfully consider a sacrificial investment in helping us save the orphanage and the church. We hope according to faith that God will not permit us to shut down the orphanage and throw our children out into the street. Nor that He will allow our brothers and sisters in Christ to be evicted from their beautiful place of biblical worship.

This is a call to action. This is a call to rise up and stand for our Haitian children and for our LaPlaine church. We believe that God will open His treasury through ministry partners like you and that He will continue to bless and provide for our orphanage and for the congregation. But we must act quickly and decisively in order to meet this challenge and overcome this threat to our kingdom mission.

May our powerful and gracious God reveal Himself yet again through each of you as He provides exceedingly and abundantly beyond all that we can ask or even think. We can indeed do all things through him who strengthens us!

Blessings in Christ,
Rev. Martin Hawley
Executive Director, RHI

I rejoiced in the Lord greatly that now at length you have revived your concern for me. You were indeed concerned for me, but you had no opportunity. Not that I am speaking of being in need, for I have learned in whatever situation I am to be content. I know how to be brought low, and I know how to abound. In any and every circumstance, I have learned the secret of facing plenty and hunger, abundance and need. I can do all things through him who strengthens me. (Philippians 4:10 – 13)
