Container for Haiti this June

Change in Plans: Container for Haiti Now Slated for First Week of June

In recent newsletters and emails, we have asked for donations of food items and other supplies with a view to sending our next container to Haiti in July. However, due to circumstances in Haiti and here in the U.S., we have decided to move up the timing for this container to the first week of June. We strongly encourage you to begin putting aside in advance an occasional large bag of rice or beans or other items you would like to donate, so that participating in this container will not pose an undue budget burden for you and so that you will already have the items in hand when we announce our loading schedule for the first week in June. As a reminder, what we are seeking to do is to provide enough food to support our orphans for six months at a time, until the next container is ready and arrives. This ensures food security for our New Joy House children. We also hope to add to the quantity of food so that we can assist some of the poorest families in our Haiti church network as well. What we are always most in need of with these container projects are the following items:

  • 50 lb. or 25 lb. bags of white or Jasmine rice
  • 50 lb. or 25 lb. bags of black or pinto beans
  • 25 lb. bags of sugar or flour
  • 8 lb. boxes of spaghetti pasta
  • 2.5 gal. jugs of corn cooking oil
  • Extra large cans (4 lbs or larger) of tuna

We know that these are unusual sizes for most people to buy. However, when you are feeding 91 children plus their caregivers, cooks, cleaning people, and other staff, it takes a lot of food each day! It is also much easier to stack into the container and to store the items until they are ready to be used. We find that all of these items are sold at BJ’s, Costco, and Sams Club, with the exception of the extra large cans of tuna, which to date we have only been able to get at BJs. If you have any questions about what to get or what else might be needed, please contact Martin Hawley. And of course we are always happy to purchase the items for you, should you want to support the container project but prefer not to in-person shop. Checks, or our EasyTithe and PayPal links, can be used to support this project. Please add a notation or send Pastor Martin an email indicating that your support is for: “June 2021 Container.”
